evaluative statment
With this brief I aimed to create a piece that derived entirely from where my research had lead showing clear information as well as depth research. The subject I chose to research came from an interest in the customisation of clothes. As most reasons would change my clothes is to give them a ne lease of life I wanted to know what exactly was driving us to change our old clothes, buy new ones and how much fashion impacts us. I started by looking at current fashion magazines and soon way looking on specialist fashion blogs as well as trend predictor sights and other pages dedicated to fashion. The information about fashion week that was just happening at the time flooded most of these sights with ‘what’s hot and what’s not’ and although this may seem frivolous to some it manages to trickle down the line. In the same week clothing sites would be selling the colours and cuts that are in and soon you start buying what the masses flock to. After pulling together some conclusions from my research I decided to survey 50 people on 12 questions about fashion, it is from this that I made my final piece. I believe that my research was thorough although if I had started sooner I would have been able to achieve more primary research perhaps been able to survey a larger group with a follow up survey to focus my information. As my project is fashion led I thought it best to try something new. Inspired by the layouts of information in ‘information is beautiful’ I began to try to apply information I had gained to a dress. I figured I would need 12 panels to represent each question and that panel would be colour divided into the percentages required from the individual question. After a lot of pinning the dress together and re pinning it, it was final sewed into once piece. I decided to use fabric paint to divide the strips on the panels up as this gave a more accurate measurement. I am really happy with the way the dress came out but if I could I would have made a few until I got a handle of my sewing capabilities so that the final outcome had less minor mistakes. I believe I could have improved the dress by using a different material perhaps one that is popular in the current fashion trends. Over all I really enjoyed looking at the brief in a new way and am happy that I did decided to take the risk and do something different.
